چکیده

In this issue I wish farewell to Larry Rosenblum, who has decided to step down from our editorial board. He has contributed to CG&A for many years, most signi cantly as the editor of two departments, Visualization Blackboard and Projects in VR. Both have been regular and prominent features of CG&A. Projects in VR covered both applications and theory relevant to virtual reality. Larry is the Program Director for Graphics and Visualization at the US National Science Foundation, where he has been instrumental in developing visual-analytics programs. Previously, he was the Liaison Scientist for Computer Science at the US Of ce of Naval Research European Ofce. He has been the Director of VR Systems and Research at the Naval Research Laboratory’s Information Technology Division. He also has been the Program Of cer for Visualization and Computer Graphics at the Of ce of Naval Research, where he created research programs in volumetric modeling and augmented reality (AR). Larry received his PhD in mathematics from Ohio State University. Besides CG&A, Larry has served on several editorial boards, including IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics, ACM Siggraph Computer Graphics, and Virtual Reality. He has guest-edited special issues and sections of CG&A, Computer, and Presence on visualization, VR, and AR. He’s a former chairman and the current director of the IEEE Visualization and Graphics Technical Committee (VGTC). Larry regularly serves on the program and conference committees of numerous international conferences. He’s a senior member of IEEE and a member of the IEEE Computer Society, ACM, and Siggraph. Larry has received the IEEE Meritorious Service Award, and the IEEE Outstanding Contribution Certi cate for initiating and cofounding the IEEE Visualization Conference. In 2008, Larry received the IEEE VGTC Visualization Career Award in recognition of his lifetime contributions to visualization. Larry has published over 80 technical papers. In them, he’s contributed signi cantly to mobile AR, scienti c and uncertainty visualization, VR displays, applications of VR and AR systems, and the understanding of human performance in graphics systems. His research includes early contributions to the development of visualization techniques resulting in advances in physical oceanography, ocean acoustics, ocean geophysics, and ocean engineering. His research has also impacted matchedeld acoustic processing and bathymetric mapping. I thank Larry for his contributions to CG&A and wish him the best of luck in his new projects.

Distinguishing Visualizations from Pretty Pictures

In 1987, Bruce McCormick led an extensive study of the benefi ts of combining computer graphics and computational-science methods. This culminated in the US National Science Foundation panel report “Visualization in Scientifi c Computing,” in which I was (serendipitously) a participant. Many people identify this event as the birth of scientifi c visualization as a distinct discipline. It was so...

Molecular Detection of Chicken Anemia Virus from Native Larry-breed Chickens in Chaharmahal-va-Bakhtiyari Province, Iran

Background and Aims: Finding prevalence of chicken anemia virus (CAV) infection in native chickens is necessary to avoid transmission of infection to commercial flocks. In this paper we attempt to describe molecular detection of chicken anemia virus in native Larry-breed chickens in Chaharmahal-va-Bakhtiyari province in Iran for the first time. Materials and Methods: Blood samples were collect...

CG&A's Departments

Gabriel Taubin has graciously invited me to write this issue’s From the Editor column, giving me the opportunity to share my thoughts on what CG&A’s departments are, how they’re run, and why we hope you benefi t from them. In 2002, Jim Thomas, CG&A’s editor in chief at the time, asked me to serve as the associate editor in chief for departments. At the time, I wondered what I was getting myself...

24 Visualization Using Virtual Reality

24.1.2 Virtual Reality What we now often refer to as virtual reality was first proposed in the 1960s [16,38,39]. In addition to the term ‘‘virtual reality,’’ many other terms such as ‘‘virtual environments,’’ ‘‘synthetic environments,’’ ‘‘virtual worlds,’’ and ‘‘artificial reality’’ have been used. Virtual reality has the capability of providing sensory information of sufficient fidelity that t...

Human Emotion Recognition from Motion Using a Radial Basis Function Network Architecture

In this paper a radial basis function network architecture is developed that learns the correlation between facial feature motion patterns and human emotions. We describe a hierarchical approach which at the highest level identiies emotions, at the mid level determines motions of facial features, and at the low level recovers motion directions. Individual emotion networks were trained to recogn...
